Budgeting in 2009

December 7th, 2008 at 07:47 pm

Hello, everyone. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to find an inexpensive and easy to use method of tracking how much money I have spent. I also need to be able to keep track of how much I will need to spend from now until next payday. I have tried Excel spreadsheets, tiny little notebooks where I write down my purchases, a PDA software program, handwritten budgets, handwritten ledgers, etc. Nothing seemed to really work because it takes so much time to deal with it. I was in Big Lots on Saturday and noticed those monthly planners that are about $2.00. I began to realize if I could just keep a simple running total of how much I spent each and how much is left, that would help a lot. I can also make notes on the dates that bills are due. I won't actually start this because the calendar starts with January. Here's 3 cheers for my success!

Sounds like a good plan. I have found I need to keep all my money in a checking account. This way when I get something I need to write it in my balance book (my debit is linked to my checking account). Then at the end of the month I can see where it all went.

I too have a planner I only write the days that bills are due. I usually sit down every sunday and write out bills and mail them out Monday mornings. I use my DEBIT CARD for any an all purchases. So at the end of the month when I get my statement I'm able to track all purchases. I have been doing this for the last six months and it works out well. I'm also able to see where I need to cut back spending on as well.

I use my Amy Knapp planner to write down my purchases. Unfortunately with any plan is that you actually have to do it!

Tracking expenses might be tough... I track my deposits.

For example if I put $200 into a bank account I know I spent $200 if the balance is zero.

I have one bank account for bills, I have another with an atm card which is used for spending.

Most expenses are put on a cc and paid from the bills account. I only need to track the deposits to that account to know how much I spent.

IRAs and similar are paid from a different account.
