I hate the IRS

June 20th, 2022 at 12:37 pm

When my husband and I file on February 11, we found out for the first time in forever for either us, that we owed the federal government. They said my income "went up." I think it went up about $1000, which I am not sure is enough to have to owe $400. Two days after that, something was eating at me that the return was not right, so I got out the paperwork and looked at it and it was wrong. The preparer counted my HSA distributions for qualifying medical expenses as income. I called a friend of mine who is a CFP and she confirmed that. So, we went back to the preparer the day after that to do an amended return. Then, the craziness started. We knew to expect it take longer to process an amended return. We waited about a month before checking the status online. It is now 18 weeks past that date and it still has not been processed, but I received a letter stating that we still owe for the original return. When I have called them, I always get a message that they are not available no matter what the time of day is. I did not even realize that today is a federal holiday until I called. But they are the ones who gave me the number to call. I don't know whether it is better to pay and hope that they FINALLY process the amended return or hope that I can call them. Oh, and did I mention that the payment due date is June 27? I hate the IRS.

If it were me, if my amended return showed a balance due, I would pay that amount. Otherwise, just wait for the amended return to be processed.

I would love to delay doing anything. The amended return gives me a refund, but the payment for the original return i due June 27, yes only 9 days after Saturday, the date I received the bill in the mail. If I pay it late, I will have to pay a late fee. I am calling them again tomorrow. Maybe someone will answer the phone??

From my experience with them, I can say that they will not answer the phone!

I called my tax preparer this morning. The manager personally has the same problem, as do some of her clients. She has been in contact with the IRS by phone. The IRS suprisingly told her to tell clients to ignore the bills they get if they have filed an amended return. In addition, we should get some interest added to our refund that,.... Wait for it... we have to declare as income next year. LOL! Gotta love the government, right? Anyway, I feel somewhat relieved, but I still hate the IRS. It seems like they could at least hire some temporary help to get them caught up.

The IRS's 2021 backlog was even worse than the 2020. They're still 16 million returns behind, and woefully understaffed. Temp staff won't cut it--anyone with the requisite tax knowledge will have better opportunities elsewhere. It's not really their fault--Congress, driven by Republicans who don't believe in taxes, has been systematically underfunding them for the better part of a decade.
